  • ISRO uses LI-Ion batteries as power source for satellite & launch vehicle applications due to their high energy density, reliability, & long cycle life.

  • ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram has successfully developed technology to produce space-grade Li-Ion cells.

  • Cells are currently being used for various satellite & launch vehicle applications.

Li-Ion Cells

  • Lithium-ion battery is type of rechargeable battery in which lithium ions move from negative electrode to positive electrode during discharge & back when charging.

  • Lithium-ion cells find large societal applications in Electric Vehicles transport & communication areas.

  • It is green alternative to fossil fuels. Being eco-friendly & environmentally sustainable.

  • ISRO is developed four types of cells – 1.5 Ah, 5Ah, 50Ah, & 100Ah.

  • ISRO had allowed Automotive Research Association of India to use 50Ah & 100Ah cells for developing prototypes of e-scooters & e-cars.

Benefits of Tie-Up

  • ISRO has been using the Li-Ion batteries as a power source for satellite.

  • Li-Ion batteries are in the cycle of operation- large duration, high energy density and lower mass, the features which are suitable for the system

  • In one rocket like GSLV or PSLV, 500 to 700 space cells are used. These cells are also used in satellites as well.

  • Usage of these batteries is not limited to only space system, they can be used effectively for automobile system.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL)

  • BHEL was founded by Union Govt. It is engineering & production company based in New Delhi.

  • BHEL was established in 1964. It is India’s largest power generation equipment manufacturer.

  • Company was granted prestigious Maharatna status in 2013 for its outstanding record of accomplishment & huge scale of operations it performs.

Indian Space Research Organisation

  • ISRO is space agency of GoI headquartered in Bangalore.

  • ISRO was established in 1969.

  • Objective of ISRO is to use space technology & its application to various national tasks.
