To extend space research, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is working on building igloo-like habitats on the lunar surface for potential future missions. ISRO plans to build igloos to protect astronauts working in space.

What Make Moon Crucial for Space Agencies?

  • The moon is a crucial and close destination for research and planetary exploration for ISRO as well as other space agencies (such as NASA, ESA, and others).

  • Lunar missions provide first steps in expanding the manned and unmanned exploration of solar system.

  • The moon can be used as a laboratory with lower gravity (1/6 of the earth’s gravity) as it is the closest and most accessible planetary object from Earth

What is ISRO’s Planning?

  • ISRO will build ‘lunar habitats, ’ to serve as an “outpost” by sending robots and 3D printers to the Moon.

  • Lunar habitats will be built by using the soil there, as well as other materials.

Progress So Far

  • ISRO has created a working model using a 3D printer in the lunar terrain test facility of the space agency.

  • Scientists have drawn five designs of the lunar habitats to create outposts on the Moon.

  • ISRO also mastered creating lunar simulant that is material that approximates the properties of lunar soil, and has about 60 tonnes of it- properties match 99.6 % with the samples brought from Moon by Apollo missions.

  • ISRO now has to take into account temperature, radiation, and meteorite collisions etc.

  • Chandrayan-2 Mission will carry an orbiter, a lander, and a rover to the moon for the first time in a budget of Rs. 800 crore.

Background

  • ISRO in February last year launched 104 satellites in a single mission.

  • ISRO also launched the South Asia Satellite, also known as GSAT-9 last year to boost ties with the neighboring nations.

What is an Igloo?

  • An igloo known as a snow house or snow hut, is a type of shelter built of snow when the snow can be easily compacted.
