India 117th Among 190 Countries in Empowering Women

India has been ranked 117th among 190 countries on Women Business and law-2020 index, released by World Bank. The index measures economic empowerment of the women. India՚s score is 74.4 which is on par with Gambia and Benin and way below Rwanda and Lesotho.

  • The global average in 2017 was 73.9 whereas in 2019 it is 75.2.
  • 10 countries- Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Latvia, Iceland, and France have scored a perfect 100
  • The report claims that no economy from East Asia and Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Central Asia were among top reformers.

  • The index analyses laws and regulations which affect women՚s economic empowerment⟋inclusion.
  • It ranks 190 countries based on 8 indicators.
  • The indicators are Mobility, Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Parenthood, Entrepreneurship, Assets and Pension.
  • The limitations of the index are emphasis on formal sector and coverage of urban areas only.
  • Whereas Sub Saharan Africa and Middle East and North Africa accounted for 9 out of 10 top reformers.
  • The World Bank said that in the last two years there has been considerable improvement in regulatory environment for women՚s economic participation.
  • 62 reforms have been enacted by 40 economies to ensure women՚s economic empowerment and their contribution in economic growth.
