  • India՚s main clients for arms export are Myanmar (46 %) , Sri Lanka (25 %) and Mauritius (14 %) .

Overview

  • The imports fell from both US and Russia during the five year period.
  • The decline was more pronounced in case of imports from Russia.
  • The top five importers of the world are:
    • Saudi Arabia
    • India
    • Egypt
    • Australia
    • China
  • The above 5 countries accounted for 36 % of all arms imports.
  • Russia is the largest exporter to India whereas USA is second largest exporter of arms to India.
  • India accounted for 25 % of total Russian arms exports.
  • The top three suppliers of arms to India are Russia (56 %) , Israel (14 %) and France (12 %) .
  • The USA was the second largest arms exporter to India in 2010 - 14. But in 2015 - 19, imports from USA dipped by 51 % than in 2010 - 14.
  • India acquired imports from other countries including:
    • Scanter-6000 radars from Denmark
    • Embraer ERJ-145 jets for early warning and control system from Brazil.
    • ACTAS sonar systems from Germany
    • Super rapid 76mm naval guns from Italy
    • K-9 Thunder 155mm artillery guns from South Korea
  • Arms imports decreased by India and Pakistan by 32 % and 39 % respectively.
  • China accounted for 73 % of Pakistan՚s arm imports during 2015 - 19 whereas USA accounted for only 4.1 % of Pakistan՚s arm imports in the same period.
  • The fall in India՚s arm imports indicates success of India՚s Make in India programme.
  • Currently India accounts for only 0.2 % of the World՚s arms exports but aims to increase its defence exports to USD 5 billion within five years.
