India and China conducted a joint military exercise “Sino India Cooperation 2016” in Ladakh along with the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian army says that the day-long exercise was focused on humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

  • The exercise compliments “Hand in Hand” series of India-China joint military exercises.
  • The purpose is to improve cooperation and maintain peace and tranquility in border areas of India and China.

Key Aspects

  • Daylong joint exercise was focused on Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR).
  • Joint teams carried out evacuation, rescue operations, and medical assistance exercises.
  • The fake situation was earthquake striking in an Indian Border village.
  • Exercise not only completed drills to provide help to the border population in case of natural calamity but also improved the level of trust and cooperation between forces of India and China along  the LAC in Eastern Ladakh.
  • Indian team was led by Brigadier R.S. Raman and the Chinese team was led by Sr Col Fan Jun.
  • Second edition of the exercise was conducted as a part of ongoing initiative between India and China to improve interaction and cooperation under provisions of Border Defence Cooperation Agreement (BDCA), 2013.
  • First Joint Exercise under BDCA, 2013 was held in February 2016 in the area of the Border Personnel Meeting Hut at Chushul Garrison of Eastern Ladakh with the Chinese troops of Moldo Garrison.

Comments

  • This is for first time India and China have conducted military exercises in state of Jammu and Kashmir in Eastern Ladakh.
  • Exercise also brings a change in stalemate over India’s bilateral disagreements with China over blacklisting of Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar at the UN and over the membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
