India Gets New Monsoon Calendar

New (in green) and existing (in red) dates for normal monsoon onset, progress and withdrawal

  • During 1901 - 1940 the existing dates were based on rainfall records.
  • Now IMD depends upon data collected during 1961 - 2019 for forecasting the new monsoon onset dates.
  • For withdrawal dates data collected during 1971 - 2019.
  • Due to global warming the major trigger for the revision of dates were the changes in the monsoon behaviour observed by IMD for the past many years.
  • The monsoon onset date remains unchanged on June 1 in Kerala.
  • In Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar including the parts of Uttar Pradesh the monsoon onset has been delayed by three to seven days.
  • Over extreme northwest India, monsoon arrival data has been advanced to July 8 from July 15.
  • Appreciable changes have been observed in the monsoon withdrawal dates.
  • Now monsoon will withdraw from northwest India 14 days later.
  • The final withdrawal date would remain unchanged on October 15.
