India Invites CLMV Countries to Join the International Solar Alliance

  • The CLMV countries of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam has been invited by India recently to join the International Solar Alliance and the Resilient Supply Chain Initiative.
  • ISA is an alliance of 121 countries initiated by India. Most of the countries are sunshine countries and they lie either completely or partly between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
India CLMV Business Conclave

A virtual business conclave was organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry in partnership with the union ministry of commerce and industry.

India and CLMV

  • To develop renewable sources of energy as well as form partnerships.
  • To penetrate global value chains.
  • Cooperation and collaboration with the CLMV region for developing a vaccine for COVID-19.
  • Medicines and medical supplies have been provided to the CLMV region.
  • Under ITEC scheme India has also trained medical personnel from the region.
  • A project development fund has been set up by India for the CLMV region with a corpus of ₹ 500 crores.
    • To incentivize Indian private sector companies.
    • To set up manufacturing units in CLMV region.
  • To the Mekong region, Lines of Credit have been extended by the Government of India.

Other Initiatives

  • To promote connectivity with the region.
  • Construction of the Trilateral Highway.
  • Construction of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit-Transport Project.
  • To promote tourism in terms of the Buddhist circuit.

CLMV Countries and Their Significance

  • Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam are the CLMV countries.
  • These countries play a significant role in marketing access to European Union and China apart from other markets due to various trade agreements.
  • CLMV countries are rich in natural resources like copper, oil, natural gas, gemstones, and teak.
  • They are the third largest economy in the world.
  • In 2019 - 20, the two-way trade between India and CLMV countries has increased from USD 1.1 billion to USD 14.1 billion.

International Solar Alliance

  • ISA was launched on 30th November 2015.
  • ISA is a group of nations that lies within the Tropics (Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn) .
  • The International Solar Alliance (ISA) initiative was proposed and launched by the India Prime Minister at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris along with the President of France.
  • Focus areas are on policy, ecosystem, and integration concerning solar energy.

  • Reducing financial risk across global market.
  • Cooperation on Technology.
