The World Economic Forum released a report that ranked countries according to their Global Manufacturing Index. India made it to the 30t position, while Japan topped the list. The ranking was based on the WEF’s ‘Readiness for the Future of Production’ report.

  • The report analyses the development of modern industrial strategies in different countries.

What is Global Manufacturing Index?

The Index places all countries in four groups

  • Leading (strong current base, high level of readiness for future)

  • High Potential (limited current base, high potential for future)

  • Legacy (strong current base, at risk for future)

  • Nascent (limited current base, low level of readiness for future).

Which Countries Are Placed in the Different Groups?

  • India has been placed under the category of ‘Legacy’ along with Mexico, Philippines, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, and others.

  • While China was placed among ‘leading’ countries, Brazil and South Africa found places among the ‘Nascent’ countries.

How Well Did India Do?

  • In an overall picture, India ranked better than its neighbours including Sri Lanka (66th), Pakistan (74th), Bangladesh (80th).

  • Other countries that ranked below India include Turkey, Canada, Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Mauritius, and UAE.
