India Ranks 97th of 118 in Global Hunger Index (GHI) (Download PDF)

In 2016, India ranked 97th out of 118 countries on the Global Hunger Index. This annual report of GHI was made by International Food Policy Research Institute’s (IFPRI). 15 % of India’s population was found undernourished.

Key Aspects

  • Hunger levels in developing countries have decreased 29 per cent since 2000, but there is still a long way to go.
  • Faster efforts are required to meet the international target to remove it by 2030.
  • Levels of hunger are “alarming” in seven countries, with Central African Republic (CAR), Chad and Zambia experiencing the poorest levels.
  • Another 43 countries, including India, Indonesia and Nigeria, have “serious” hunger levels.

    • Sri Lanka (84)
    • Bangladesh (90)
  • India is ahead of Pakistan at 107th where 22 % are undernourished. That scored is 33.4 on the 0-100 point scale. There is a marginal improvement from its previous score of 35.1.
  • 38.7 % of under five children are stunted because of lack of food.
  • Since 2000, 20 countries, including Cambodia, Rwanda, and Myanmar have all reduced their GHI scores by over 50% each.
  • India has lowest rank among BRICS nation such as:

    • Brazil (16)
    • Russia (24)
    • China (29)
    • South Africa (51)
