India and European Union Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on water resources gets approval from the Union cabinet. It will strengthen technological, scientific and water management capabilities for mutual benefit of India and EU.

  • MoU will enable identifying fundamental environmental issues and developing sustainable methods in the field of water management.
  • India and EU can exchange experience and cooperate in water management field.
  • Both the countries will exchange technical know-how on water issues such as integrated water resource management plans within river basins.
  • India will get the knowledge for sustainable water management to deal with challenges such as climate change, growing population, and competing water demands between industry and population.
  • Joint Working Group will oversee all the activities to fulfillment.

Background        

  • The Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation encouraged cooperation with other countries for water management and resources development.
  • EU is successful in distribution of water resources; water pricing and water use efficiency, so India has decided to collaborate with it.
  • The member states of EU have adopted water-pricing policies, which inspire conservation of water resources to achieve environmental objectives.
