India and Greece signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will enable both the countries for unlimited number of flights into each and introduced the air service agreement for open skies.

  • Greece is the first country to sign an open sky arrangement with India under its new civil aviation policy.

Key facts

  • Currently no any direct flights are available between India and Greece so passengers of Greece have to travel via Turkey or Gulf States to rich Greece which is time consuming.
  • This is the first air services agreement between India and Greece, so both the countries were avoided the start of air services before this agreement.
  • But after this agreement both the countries can operate unlimited number of flights to each other and the airlines carriers from Greek will be decided unlimited traffic rights to six Indian metro cities.


  • India was planning to become part pf ‘open sky’ air service agreements (ASA) with SAARC countries and also with countries which are 5,000 km far form Delhi radius.
  • The new civil aviation policy facilitated India to sign ASAs with other countries by bilateral negotiations and also can decide the number of flights that airlines can fly into both countries.
  • There is no limit on flights or seats as per open sky pact.
  • Currently, India has an open sky agreement with the US and a near open sky agreement with the UK where as for SAARC and ASEAN countries, India has an open sky agreement with more than ten countries.
