India at 137th Spot in Global Peace Index 2017 (Download PDF)

In Global Peace Index 2017 India has secured 137th spot in out of 163 independent states and territories. The ranking is based on the level of peacefulness. With this India has upgraded its standard because in last year index, India was ranked 141st and 143rd in 2015.

  8. Sudan and Central African Rep at 155th spot
  9. Ukraine at 154th spot
  • 99.7 % of world’s population is covered under this index and in 2017 global level of peace has been improved with 0.28 %, in which 93 countries have improved and 68 countries deteriorated.
  • Largest improvement has been noted in South America as fourth most peaceful region and Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world aging.

About Global Peace Index (GPI)

  • The Sydney (Australia) based Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) published GPI report annually since 2007.
  • Indicators range from a nation’s level of military expenditure to its relations with neighbouring countries and the percentage of prison population is less in 162 countries.
  • It also comprises safety and security in society, extent of domestic and international conflict.
  • The IEP is an international and self-governing think tank committed to draw the world’s attention towards reconciliation as a positive, achievable, and tangible degree of human well-being and development.
  • 2017 is the eleventh edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI).
  • The Index is prepared by the Sydney-based think tank Institute every year for Economics and Peace.
  • GPI is complete analysis of State’s trends in peace, its economic value, and how to develop peaceful societies.
  • Ranking of countries are measured from 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators using three thematic domains:
  1. the level of Societal Safety and Security
  2. the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict;
  3. The degree of Militarisation
  • Other parameters such as homicide rate, the ease of access to weapons, the impact of terrorism and the number of armed services personnel in the population were keep in mind to prepare the multifaceted index of peace indicators.
