India has grown on the military expenses around 8.5 % by 2016. This made the country 5th largest spender. The figure was released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) revealed on Monday. As per the figure the US tops the list with a growth of 1.7 per cent between 2015 and 2016 to $611 billion. The other four being China, Japan, South Korea, Australia. South Arabia is the 3rd largest spender in 2015 which has dropped to 4th position, Pakistan does not figure in the top 15 spenders, and spent $9.93 billion.

The report: -

  • The US military have decreases in speeding which is due to the economic crises and the withdrawal of Us troops from Afghanistan and Iraq
  • It still increases the overall US budget despite the continuing legal restraints
  • The military expenditure in Western Europe has gone up by 2.6 % in the second consecutive year
  • The failing oil revenue and associated economic problems have reduced the military spending
  • Last year’s global military spending accounted for 2.2 per cent of the worldwide GDP.
  • Middle East has seen the highest military spending with an average of 6.0%
  • The lowest rate is in America with an average of 1.3%
  • Data for all the middle eastern countries were not available
  • Iran and Kuwait have seen substantial increases where sizable reduction was seen in Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
  • In Asia and Oceania the military expenditure rose by 4.6%
  • Spending levels are related to the many tensions in the region such as over territorial rights in the South China Sea.
