India’S First Green Rail Corridor Launched in Tamil Nadu [ Current News (Concise) ]

India’s first Green Rail Corridor was inaugurated by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu. It is the 114-km long Rameswaram-Manamadurai track in Tamil Nadu. It was inaugurated through video-conferencing from Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Key Details:

  • Green Rail Corridor ensures zero toilet discharge on rail tracks.
  • As part of its commitment to clean environment in the ‘Swachh Rail-Swachh Bharat’ initiative.
  • Trains in the section have been furnished with bio-toilets to ensure zero discharge of human waste on the rail tracks.
  • Chennai Central Railway Station and Tiruchirappalli Railway Station, Union Railways Minister also inaugurated high speed upgraded Wi-Fi facility and set up in association with Google.
  • Technology has been developed mutually by Indian Railways and Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) through a MoU.
  • Launched a traditional medicine centre under Ayush at Perambur Railway Hospital.
