First obesity clinic for children has been opened at Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was inaugurated at Surya Hospital by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s wife Amruta Fadnavis. Aim is to control rising cases of child obesity.

The decision came after the recent survey conducted in Pune Mumbai found that 18 % of school-going children suffer from obesity, 32 % were overweight, and 52% were potential diabetic.

  • Will have counsellors, nutritionists, and specialists in obesity care.
  • All the advanced medical procedures to treat obesity among adolescents.
  • According to survey of the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO) and the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF (working for combating obesity around the world) around 200 million schoolchildren are suffering from obesity.

About Obesity

  • Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat causes negative effect on health.
  • A person with Body mass index (BMI), a measurement obtained by dividing a person’s weight by the square of the person’s height, above 30 kg/m2 is said to be obese. People with BMI between 25–30 kg/m2 are defined as overweight.

  • Obesity can be causes various diseases specially heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.
  • The main reason behind the obesity is excessive food intake, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility.
