Indian women boxers started off 2017 on a high with good showing at the season-opening Nations Cup in Serbia. Five medals have been assured by Indian boxers after four of them entered the semi-finals while one made the final of the event.

Highlights

  • The sixth Nation’s cup started on January 10 and is being held in Vrbas, Serbia.
  • The tournament is being competed among 18 countries.
  • In the tournament and the bouts are being fought under the new International Boxing Association (AIBA) technical rules, where boxers have to fight in three rounds of three minutes each.
  • The tournament is the first for Indian women boxers under the tutelage of new coach Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu.
  • Coach Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu served as the men’s coach for more than two decades.
  • The women’s boxing team won a total of 6 medals - 1 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze.
  • Haryana-girl Neeraj (51kg), competing in his maiden international tournament, stood out with a gold medal.
  • Sarjubala Devi (48kg), Priyanka Chaudhary (60kg), Pooja (69kg) and Seema Punia settled for silver medals.
  • Veteran Kavita Goyat (75kg) was bronze-medallist.
  • It is organised by Vojvodina boxing Association.
