AAW is a guided bomb released from the aircraft, which can be guided through precision navigation system, reaching targets at greater than 70 km range, with high accuracies. A glide bomb or standoff bomb is a standoff weapon with flight control surfaces to give it a flatter.

What is a Glide Bomb?

  • Gliding flight path than that of a conventional bomb without such surfaces.

  • Allows the bomb to be released at a distance from the target rather than right over it so the bomb can reach even when the aircraft cannot.

The DRDO Glide Bombs

  • The DRDO Glide Bomb can be deployed as a standardized medium range precision guided weapon, especially for engagement of defended targets from outside the range of standard anti-aircraft defenses.

  • Specially developed for Indian Air Force to fill their recruitment of precision guided weapons

Development

Was designed and developed by:

  • Nodal Laboratory Research Centre Imarat in Hyderabad

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation with the help of Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE) in Bengaluru

  • Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh

  • Armaments Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune.

Variants of DRDO Glide Bomb

There are two variants of the DRDO Glide Bomb:

  • Garuthmaa is the winged version with range up to 100 km.

  • Garudaa is the non-winged version with range of 30 km and in future, the range will be enhanced to 100 km. It has onboard navigation and guidance systems.
