Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological Systems Inaugurated at INS Garuda

The Indian Navy started operation of the Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological System (IAAMS) at INS Garuda, Naval air station located in Kochi, Kerala. IAAMS is equipped with state-of-the-art meteorological sensors, Radar Vertical Wind Profiler, Ceilometer, Transmissometer and Automatic Weather Observation System.

  • The Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological System (IAAMS) has already been launched at Rajali Air Station in Tamil Nadu and INS Parundu Uchipuli in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu.

Importance of IAAMS for Indian Navy

  • The IAAMS project at INS Garuda will promote aviation safety through automation of weather monitoring process.
  • IAAMS continuously records relevant weather parameters that are vital for accurate weather forecasting automatically.
  • IAAMS provides automatic dissemination of routine weather reports as per standards of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to other air stations.
  • IAAMS has got a special alarm feature that alerts the duty staff during abnormal change of weather parameters that may affect safe flying operations.

About INS Garuda: Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological System for Navy

  • INS Garuda is fourth air station installed with this integrated system.
  • IAAMS project will modernize meteorological infrastructure of 9 Naval Air Stations (NASs) .
  • Installation of the system at remaining 5 stations is expected to be completed by March 2019.
  • INS Garuda also has a number of naval aviation training schools. The training schools train pilots and technical personnel.
  • INS Garuda has a Aeronautical Training Institute for training officers and sailors in aircraft maintenance.
  • INS Garuda has facilities for imparting training in air-borne anti-submarine operations affiliated with the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) School.
