The International Day for Biological Diversity (or World Biodiversity Day) is a United Nations–sanctioned international day for the promotion of biodiversity issues. It is currently held on May 22. The International Day for Biological Diversity 2019 celebrations focuses on biodiversity as the foundation for our food and health and a key catalyst in transforming food systems.

Background & Convention

  • The International Day for Biological DC Diversity was created by the Second Committee of UN General Assembly in 1993 until 2000.

  • On Dec 29 it was held to celebrate the Convention on Biological Diversity.

  • Thereafter the date was shifted to adopt the commemoration of the Convention on May 22,1992 at the Rio Earth Summit.

  • The biodiversity is concerned with the stakeholders in sustainable agriculture, desertification, land degradation, drought, health and sanitation, climate change, science and technology innovations, water sanitation etc.

  • At the Rio + 20 outcome document the critical role of biodiversity was recognized as “The World We Want: A Future for All.

  • The Convention of Biological Diversity has three main goals- the sustainable use of its component, fair and equitable sharing of its benefits arising from genetic resources.

  • The Convention was opened for signature at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro on 5 June 1992

  • The overall objective of the CBD is to develop national strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of the biological diversity.

  • The theme for the International Biodiversity 2019 was ‘Our Biodiversity, Our Food and Our Health’.

Slow Food International

  • Slow Food International was founded in the year 1986 in Italy by Carlo Petrini.

  • This organization promotes local food and traditional cooking.

  • It preserves traditional and regional cuisine along with the promotion of farming of plants, seeds and livestock of the local ecosystem.

  • It also educate citizens about the risks of fast food along with the drawbacks of commercial agribusiness and factory farms.

  • It teaches gardening skills to students and prisoners along with the ethical buying in local marketplaces.

Ways to Protect Biodiversity

  • Reducing meat consumption

  • Eating and purchasing seasonal foods

  • Buying local foods

  • Buying organic foods

  • Reducing food waste

  • Composting food scraps

  • Reducing food packaging by using reusable bags or reusing glass jars or containers

  • Avoiding single-use plastics like plastic straws, coffee cups, plastic cutlery, take out containers or plastic water bottles

  • Promoting local and indigenous biodiversity for food and nutrition

  • Reducing or eliminating pesticides and fertilizer
