The International Workshop on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (IWDRI) was held in New Delhi organised by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in collaboration with United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).

What is the Aim of the IWDRI?

  • The workshop aimed to take the dialogue on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and global cooperation further.

  • It brought together countries from different parts of the world with different socio-economic backgrounds and geographical features.

  • It provided opportunity to learn from their unique experiences in their efforts towards building disaster resilient infrastructure.

  • The workshop saw participation of multilateral development banks, United Nations, private sector, and academics to identify best practices in infrastructure sector.

  • The Workshop identified Best Practices in the Infrastructure Sector, as well as key issues in existing practices and ways to address them.

  • Priority areas for collaboration on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure were identified.

  • It helped foster a sustained dialogue and mutual exchange of experiences, lessons and solutions

What is NDMA?

  • National Disaster Management Authority abbreviated as NDMAis an agency of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

  • Its primary purpose is to coordinate response to natural or anthropogenic disasters.

  • It also works for capacity building in disaster resiliency and crisis response.

  • NDMA was established through the Disaster Management Act enacted by the Government of India in May 2005.

What is UNISDR?

  • The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) was created in December 1999. It is the successor to the secretariat of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.

  • It was established to ensure the implementation of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.

  • UNISDR is part of the United Nations Secretariat and its functions span the social, economic, environmental, as well as humanitarian fields.

  • UNISDR supports the implementation, follow-up, and review of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, adopted by the Third UN world Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.
