Jaipur is next proposed site for UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization) world heritage recognition, as informed by Union Minister for Culture, Rajasthan, in Rajya Sabha recently.

  • Teams of UNESCO & ASI are likely to visit city to review its eligibility for World Heritage City status.

Significance of World Heritage City Status for Jaipur

  • It will be big step for development of city if Jaipur gets recognition under UNESCO as World Heritage city as it will directly have positive impact on local economy & boost domestic & international tourism.

  • There will be rise in employment & business of local handicrafts around world.

  • Preparations are going on in Jaipur to get World heritage status. Officials from 8 departments w/4 experts will review process of work Friday.

  • They will conduct meetings at several places in city according to world heritage project officer’s information.

Review of Following Works Will Be Done Before Visit of UNESCO & ASI Teams to Jaipur:

  • Work progress on historic doors of city.

Some Key Components of Walled City of Jaipur:

Amer Fort:

  • Majestic citadel built by Maan Singh, Amer is situated on high hillock of Aravali.

  • Once capital of Rajasthan before Jaipur, it is quite popular among local & overseas tourists for regal elephant rides, its exemplary architecture & Sound & Light Show which pays tribute to Rajputana heritage in Amitabh Bachchan’s baritone.

Sheesh Mahal:

  • Mesmerizing Sheesh Mahal situated w/I fort is adorned w/millions of glass mirrors on walls & ceiling, which offer fascinating aura to visitors of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site in Jaipur.

Nahargarh Fort:

  • This mesmerizing fort formed strong defense ring & created strong protecting force for Amer & Jaigarh Fort.

  • W/intact 953 honeycombed kharokhas (windows), Hawa Mahal enjoys credit of being tallest building in world w/o foundation.

  • There is no front door & hence one needs to enter palace from behind.

  • It is called Palace of Winds owing to its 5-story exterior w/953 windows which help in keeping palace cool as wind blows gently.

Jal Mahal:

  • This is architectural wonder.

  • W/5-story palace, there are 2 floors which are visible on top of water in middle of Maan Sagar Lake while other 3 remain hidden in water.

World Heritage Sites of India

  • Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, Fatehpur Sikri & forts of Rajasthan are among 37 World Heritage Sites of India under protection of ASI.

  • ‘Victorian and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai’ being latest addition to list. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) submitted proposal to UNESCO in 2015 for recognizing Jaipur as World Heritage City.
