On 26th January, 2020, in Mann ki baat the Prime Minister of India talked about the successful strides made by Jal Shakti Campaign. He gave the example of Jalore district of Rajasthan where two step wells have been rejuvenated by people participation.

  • Saarahi Lake in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh has been given a new life by people’s collective efforts.

  • In Suniya Kot village along the Almora- Haldwani highway, people have solved water crisis of the village by raising funds and donating labour. They ensured water availability in the village by laying down pipeline and setting pumping station.

Overview

  • Jal Shakti Abhiyan was launched on July 1st, 2019.

  • It was planned to occur in two phases- 1st phase from 1st July till 15th September and 2nd phase from 1st October to 30th November for states receiving North East monsoon.

  • Jal Shakti Abhiyan is a Jan Andolan on the lines of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, for water conservation and future security.

  • Under JSA central government officers will work with district administration of 1592 blocks of 256 water stressed districts.

They aim to achieve water conservation through five interventions:

  • Rainwater harvesting

  • Renovating traditional water bodies and tanks

  • Bore well recharge constructions

  • Watershed development

  • Intensive afforestation

  • JSA plans mass mobilization of school/college students, swachhagrahis, Self Halp Groups, PRI (Panchayati Raj Institution) members and defense personnel etc.
