Prafullachandra Natwarlal Bhagwati the former Chief Justice of India is passed away at the age of 95 years. He is pioneer of Judicial Activism because he has introduced the concepts of Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and absolute liability to the Indian judicial system.

  • He has made the well-known Judgment that “there was no need for a person to have any Locus Standi to approach the court on the issue of fundamental rights. ”
  • He also had made important judgments in the Maneka Gandhi passport impounding case of 1978 where he had said that a person had full right to hold a passport and their movements cannot be restricted.
  • He also gives judgment that the captive also have too enjoyed fundamental rights.

About Justice Bhagwati

  • Prafullachandra Natwarlal Bhagwati was born on 21st December 1921.
  • He was the freedom fighter of India and was also arrested in 1942.
  • He had completed his law from Government Law College, Bombay.
  • He had started his career from Bombay High Court and later in 1960 he was appointed as judge of the Gujarat High Court.
  • He also had served as a judge of the Supreme Court in July 1973.
  • He is the 17th Chief Justice of India and had served from 12 July 1985 to 20 December 1986 till his retirement.
  • He was san of Justice Natwarlal H. Bhagwati, a Supreme Court judge.
