Sports Authority of India (SAI) shortlisted 734 young players for scholarship programme under KHELO INDIA Talent Identification Development Scheme. Move came following successful conduct of Khelo India School Games.

  • Names were finalised by SAI’s High Powered Committee (HPC) after due diligence.
  • Talent Identification Committee was formed earlier, comprising Arjuna Awardees & Dronacharya Awardees, to shortlist & propose names of beneficiaries to High Powered Committee.

KHELO INDIA Scholarship Programme

  • Scholarship programme is designed to take care of expenses of players including training, development, boarding & lodging & tournament exposure apart from expense allowance.

  • Talent spotting & age verification of selected players is driven by scientific & trusted method thru Tanner Whitehouse 3 (TW3) method, popular test for assessing children’s bone age.

  • Annual stipend of Rs. 1.2 lakhs will be given to players on quarterly basis to meet their out of pocket expenses, treating injuries.

  • This amount will cover even smaller but very important expenses like local travel for themselves & their parents/family members.

  • Support & skill trainings will be provided at KHELO INDIA accredited Academies.

  • Strong performance management system would be in place & performances will be rewarded.

  • If athletes are not fulfilling criterion & coming up to requisite standards, they may be pulled out from academies.

  • Athletes must report injury immediately so that timely rehabilitation can be offered.

  • Robust performance monitoring system would be put in place to get best out of everyone involved in system.

Accreditation of Various Academies for Nurturing Young Talent

  • For training purpose, High Powered Committee accredited various private, State & Sports Authority of India academies to create strong ecosystem for nurturing talent. Committee accredited 21 non-SAI academies as well.

  • Aim is to develop more such academies so that young athletes can get access to best training w/o having to travel long distances.

  • Accredited academies will look after training, boarding & tournament expenses of athletes. These academies will be divided into 3 categories.

  • There will be strong review mechanism for academies on periodical basis.

  • Academies that do not maintain desired standards & fulfill performance criteria, may be delisted.


  • Programme aims at mainstreaming sports as tool for individual development, community development, economic development & national development.

  • Programme would cover about 200 million children in age group of 10 - 18 under massive national physical fitness drive.

  • It would see launch of new Pan Indian Sports Scholarship scheme that would cover 1000 most talented young athletes each year across select sports disciplines.

  • Each athlete selected under scheme would receive annual scholarship worth Rs. 5 lakh for duration of 8 years.

  • Sports would be given priority in Schools & Colleges under Khelo India Campaign.
