United Nations Public Service Award has been honoured to the Mamata Banerjee a Chief Minister of West Bengal for Kanyashree Prakalpa (Girl Child) scheme in The Hague, Netherlands. It is the highest prize of the United Nations Public Service.

  • Total 552 projects of 62 different countries were nominated for this award and West Bengal has won it at first sport in the Asia-Pacific group for the category: ‘Reaching the Poorest and Most Vulnerable through Inclusive Services and Participation‘.
  • Whereas in the Latin America-Caribbean Group Argentina has won because of its programme for early childhood education.
  • UK has won the award in the Western Group for its prevent senior citizens programme from being defrauded.

Background

  • Kanyashree Prakalpa initiative was launched by Mamata Banerjee the Chief Minister of the West Bengal in October 2013.
  • The initiative was launched with the aim to improve the lives and the status of the adolescent girls and prevent child marriage, so government is giving financial help to all those girls for higher studies which are belongs to disadvantaged families.

  • Kanyashree Prakalpa schema has also won many awards previously such as appreciation of the UNICEF.
  • Around 40 Lakh girls who are attending School and college have get advantage of this scheme.
  • The financial support is providing to these girls in the form of scholarship so that they gets encouragement to attend school.
