Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has taken the initiative to control pollution caused, especially by old buses that run on diesel. For cutting down emissions from such buses, KSRTC introduced 25 new buses that will run on biodiesel. it will help reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, and consequently pollution and global warming.

  • Buses from the other three corporations, NEKRTC, NWKRTC and BMTC will also be run on biofuel if all goes as per plan.
  • Around Rs. 60 - 70 crore will be saved annually on diesel alone.

  • The routes of the newly launched buses are Bengaluru-Kundapura, Bengaluru-Bidar, Bengaluru-Tirupati and Bengaluru-Chennai.

  • Move will save the corporation money as it gets a rebate of Rs. 5 per liter of biofuel consumed.
  • Buses will AC multi-axle high-breed buses.
  • They can run both on biodiesel and diesel.
  • It is tested and certified by TUV of Germany for best possible safety even in case of roll over and accidents.

About Bio-Diesel

  • It is an alternative fuel similar to conventional or ‘fossil’ diesel.
  • It can be produced from straight vegetable oil, animal oil/fats, tallow and waste cooking oil.
  • The process used to convert these oils to Biodiesel is called transesterification.
