Kerala State government has taken big step in the direction of pollution free environment by adopting Green Protocol to make the weddings more nature-friendly. The protocol is adopted under anti-plastic drive and Green-Kerala Mission of Kerala government.

Key Facts

  • Plastic and other non-biodegradable articles such as disposable glasses and plates and thermocol decorations will be banned in wedding under this protocol and have compulsories use of non-biodegradable articles such as tumblers, plates and other utensils made of glass and environment-friendly metals in any occasions.
  • Currently this protocol has been implemented in some of the cities at primary phase by Suchitwa Mission (a nodal agency of state for sanitation) and they are Kannur, Ernakulam, Kollam and Alappuzha.
  • Letter the protocol will be implemented in the rest of the districts soon.
  • This initiative will be jointly implemented by district administration, panchayat authorities and socio-cultural and religious outfit.
  • Suchitwa Mission and Revenue Department will appoint officers for inspections in marriage halls, convention centres and hotels and other venues of the wedding ceremony, Special squads to check that they are following the protocol or not and if not then they will tack appropriate action depending on the nature of utensils and articles used in the ceremony.
