The projects for Defence industrial corridor were launched by Union Defence Minister along with the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in Aligarh district in August 2018. Later on in January 2019 the Defence Minister inaugurated the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor.

The main idea behind setting up these defence industrial units is to boost indigenous production of defence equipments and ensure a better connectivity among the various defence industrial units.

Background & Overview

  • As a part of Make in India initiative, the Defence manufacturing was identified as one of the 25 key sectors.

  • Government of India had proposed to set up two corridors one in Tamil Nadu and the other in UP.

  • The main purpose of setting of these two corridors is for inclusion of Indigenous Design, Development and Manufacture (IDDM) category and giving it priority in capital acquisition, introduction of make procedure and simplification of licensing process and modification of offset policy.

  • Under this defence corridor six nodal points in UP were identified as Agra, Aligarh, Lucknow, Kanpur, Chitrakoot and Jhansi.

  • Five nodal points in Tamil Nadu were identified as Hosur, Salem, Chennai, Coimbatore and Tiruchirapally.

  • The exhibition of products was planned by armed forces, defence public sector undertakings (PSUs) and DRDO over the next five years.

  • On August 11 last year, the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor was launched at Aligarh with announced investments of Rs. 3,732 crore.

  • On Jan 20 2019 Rs. 3,038 crore investment was announced for Tamil Nadu Defence corridor.

  • Majority of the investments would come from PSUs as Ordnance Factory Board, Bharat Electronics Limited and Bharat Dynamics Limited committed to invest Rs. 2,305 crore, Rs. 140.5 crore and Rs. 150 crore, respectively.

  • Private companies such as TVS, Data Patterns and Alpha Designs would make investments of Rs. 50 crore, Rs. 75 crore and Rs. 100 crore, respectively.
