Highlights of Project:

  • Under pilot project, stove & methanol canister will be made available in limited scale.

  • Methanol cooking fuel will be available in canisters of 1.2 kg capacity each, which will be priced at around Rs. 32 & around 18 of them would be equivalent to one conventional domestic LPG cylinder.

  • Technology for canister & special burner is provided by Sweden.

  • In 2 months, APL will start commercial production of methanol-based cooking fuel.

  • Initially product will be made available for northeastern region.

Boost to NITI Aayog’s Programme

  • This is India’s 1st step towards realizing concept of ‘Methanol Economy’, flagship programme of NITI Aayog.

  • Through programme, NITI Aayog is working on roadmap to replace 20 % of country’s crude imports thru methanol alone.

Methanol as an Alternative Fuel

  • Methanol is promising fuel as it is clean, cheaper than fossil fuels & good substitute for heavy fuels.

  • India imports methanol from Saudi Arabia & Iran at present.

  • Across world, methanol is emerging as clean, sustainable transportation fuel of future.

About Methanol

  • Methanol can be used as energy producing fuel, transportation fuel & cooking fuel, cutting down India’s oil import bill by estimated 20 % over next few years.

  • Unlike CNG, using methanol as transportation fuel would require minimal alteration in vehicles.

  • Methanol is clean-burning fuel that produces fewer smog-causing emissions — such as sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) & particulate matter. It can improve air quality & related human health issues.

  • Methanol is most commonly produced on commercial scale from natural gas.

  • It can be produced from renewable sources such as biomass & recycled carbon dioxide.

  • As high-octane vehicle fuel, methanol offers excellent acceleration & power. It improves vehicle efficiency.

Methanol as an Enduring Solution to Human Energy Needs

  • Methanol has potential to be enduring solution to human energy needs is because beltched out C02 (greenhouse gas emission) both from using Methanol & while producing Methanol can be tapped back to produce Methanol.

  • Thereby seamless loop of CO2 sequestration cycle is created to perpetually burn fuels w/o polluting environment at all.

  • C02 from steel plants, Thermal Power plants, Cement Plants etc. can be tapped in large quantities to produce Methanol.

Concept of Methanol Economy

  • Concept of “Methanol Economy” is being actively pursued by China, Italy, Sweden, Israel, US, Australia, Japan & many other European countries.

  • 10 % of fuel in China in transport Sector is Methanol.

  • Methanol Economy, if adopted by India can be one of best ways to mitigate Environmental hazards of growing economy.

  • NITI Aayog is preparing road map for full-scale implementation in near future.
