Legendary music director MS Viswanathan passed away July 15, 2015


MS Viswanathan Doyen was music composer who passed away in Chennai, Tamil Nadu at the age of 87. Viswanathan had composed the veteran musician for over a thousand films in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. He was fondly called as the King of Light Music (Mellisai Mannar in Tamil).

MS Viswanathan was born on 24 June 1928 in Elapulli in Palghat district of Tamil Nadu. He had entered the film career as a child artist starring as the Bala Murugan in the film Kannagi.

MS Viswanathan had composed music for over 1700 films in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. Some of his best films include Sumaithaangi, Paasamalara, Aayirathil Oruvan, Server Sundaram and Enga Veetu Pillai.

MS Viswanathan has the distinction of having worked with four chief ministers from the film world. They are MG Ramachandran, NT Ramarao, M.Karunanidhi and J.Jayalalithaa.

MS Viswanathan received many awards and honours. These are-

  • Kalaimamani (A jewel for art) of Tamil Nadu Government and several other prestigious music awards.
  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has conferred the Thirai Isai Chakravarthy (in Tamil means The Emperor of Cine Music) title.
