MIT Scientists Developed Extremely Micro Robots (Download PDF)

Scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recently developed micro-robot that can be used to monitor oil or gas pipeline or to diagnose disease in human body. Size of this robot is abt 10 micrometres. In addition, scientists have discovered way in which such robots can be produced extensively.

Key Facts of MIT Discovery

  • These very small robots are named ‘syncells’ (Synthetic Cells).

  • Process, called “auto perforation”, directs fracture lines so that they produce miniscule pockets of predictable size & shape.

  • Scientists have used 2-dimensional format of carbon & graphene in formation of outer structure of this miniature robot.

  • According to professor of MIT, this robot behaves like living biological cell.

  • Formation of such small robots in large quantities lies in controlling process of natural fracturing of thin, brittle material like atom.

  • Scientists direct ‘fracture lines’ directly thru ‘automatic punching’ so that they can produce at least pockets of estimated size & shape.

  • Robots are attached to these electronic circuits & materials inside these pockets, which can collect & store statistics.
