DRDO developed Muntra, India’s first unmanned, remotely operated tank at its Chennai lab, Indian Army signed MoU with DRDO for one regiment of the advanced Medium Range Surface to Air Missiles (MRSAM) defense system and Navy’s second Landing Craft Utility (LCU) Mark IV L52 ship built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), Kolkata launched in Kolkata.

  • Launched in three variants:

    • Muntra-S for surveillance
    • Muntra-M for mine detection
    • Muntra-N for reconnaissance in areas with nuclear and biological threats.
  • Likely to be used in Naxal-hit areas.

  • Integrated camera with laser range finder which can be used to spy on ground target 15 km away

MRSAM Defense System: MoU between Indian Army and DRDO

  • Indian Army and Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) signed a MoU to raise one regiment of the advanced Medium Range Surface to Air Missiles (MRSAM) defense system.
  • Army planning five regiments of MRSAM defense system to be deployed opposite to China and Pakistan. Each regiment has four launchers each with three missiles.

About MRSAM

  • Advanced, all weather, mobile, land-based air defense system
  • Can shoot down enemy ballistic missiles, aircraft, helicopters, drones, surveillance aircraft and AWACS aircraft.
  • Capable of engaging multiple aerial targets at ranges of more than 50 km.
  • Land-based variant of the long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) or Barak-8 naval air defense system
  • Comprises of a command-and-control system, mobile launchers, tracking radar and missiles.
  • Jointly developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and DRDO
  • Indigenous content giving boost to the Make-in-India initiative.
