To strengthen cyber security, Union government announced a slew of measures, including requirement for organisations with significant IT infrastructure to appoint cyber security officers and National cyber coordination center to provide real time situational awareness and rapid response at a cost of Rs. 985 crore. This project will completed in 5 years with the Phase 1 ready expected to be operational by March 2017.

Steps Undertaken

  • Central Government to strengthen Cert-IN (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team), the governments’ cyber security arm.
  • Organisations having a significant IT infrastructure to appoint cyber security officers.
  • Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Jharkhand planning state Certs.
  • Phase 1 of NCCC to be operational by March 2017.

About CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team)

  • CERT-In is a government-mandated nodal agency for information technology (IT) security established in 2004.

Purpose of CERT-In

  • Protect Indian cyberspace and software infrastructure against destructive and hacking activities.
  • Respond to computer security incidents, report on vulnerabilities, and promote effective IT security practices.
  • Issue guidelines, vulnerability notes, advisories, and whitepapers regarding information security practices, prevention, procedures, response, and reporting of cyber security incidents.
