MoU between India-Guyana on Renewable Energy

The Union Cabinet was informed of an MoU between India and Guyana on bilateral cooperation in renewable energy signed on January 30,2018 by Power and New & Renewable Energy ministry and the Foreign Minister of the Co-operative, Guyana.

What Does the MoU Say?

  • Establish the basis for a cooperative institutional relationship to encourage and promote technical bilateral cooperation on new and renewable energy issues.
  • The issues would be based on mutual benefit, equality, and reciprocity.
  • The MoU envisages establishing a Joint Working Committee to review, monitor, and discuss matters relation to areas of cooperation.
  • The MoU aims for exchange of expertise and networking of information.

Advantage of MoU

  • The Memorandum of Understanding will help in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Guyana

  • Guyana officially the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, is a sovereign state on the northern mainland of South America.
  • It is, often considered part of the Caribbean region because of its strong cultural, historical, and political ties with other Anglo Caribbean countries and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) .
  • Guyana is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Suriname to the east and Venezuela to the west.
  • With 215,000 square km (83,000 sq mi) , Guyana is the fourth-smallest country on mainland South America after Uruguay, Suriname, and French Guiana (an overseas region of France) .
  • Guyana is the only South American nation in which English is the official language.
  • The region known as “the Guianas” consists of the large shield landmass north of the Amazon River and east of the Orinoco River known as the “land of many waters” .
