MoU Signed Between ISRO and DRDO to Provide Technologies for Human Space Mission (Download PDF)

In a significant development in the field of Space and Technology, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) signed Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to provide technologies for development of human centric systems for Human Space Mission. The main aim of ISRO is to demonstrate country’s human spaceflight capability before 75th anniversary of India’s independence in 2022.

MoU Overview

A delegation of ISRO Scientists along with various DRDO labs signed this MoU to provide technologies for human centric systems including the technologies specific to Human Space Mission.

The signatories included:

i) Aerial Delivery Research & Development Establishment (ADRDE)

ii) Defence Bio-Engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL)

iii) Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL)

iv) Defence Laboratory (DL) Jodhpur

v) Centre for Fire, Explosive & Environment Safety (CFEES)

vi) Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences (DIPAS)

vii) Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS)

To meet the requirements of ISRO’s human space mission the technological capabilities of DRDO will be customized with respect to various defence applications.

Technologies to Be Provided to ISRO by DRDO

  • Parachutes for safe recovery of crew module

  • Space food and space crew health monitoring and emergency survival kit

  • Radiation measurement and protection

Other Developments

  • To conduct preliminary research on psychological and physiological needs of crew and development of training facilities, ISRO has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Air Force’s Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM).

  • As of September 2019, the first Level of astronaut selection has already been done.

  • The pilots selected have undergone various tests and exercise that includes radiological tests, physical exercise tests, lab investigations, clinical tests.
