Ace Badminton Player Ms. P. V. Sindhu scripted history by becoming the 1st Indian to win BWF World Tour Finals. PV Sindhu, the 2016 Rio Olympic silver medallist, created history on 16th December 2018 as she became the first Indian to win the BWF World Tour Finals.

About the victory of P V Sindhu,

  • She defeated Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara, by 21 - 19 21 - 17 in the final match that lasted for an hour and two minutes.

  • Earlier, Sindhu defeated Ratchanok by 21 - 16,25 - 23 in the semi-finals to enter the finals of the season-ending BWF World Tour tournament.

  • This is Sindhu’s 14th tournament title.

  • This victory comes after seven silver medals for the World No 6, starting from the Olympics to the World Championships and the Asian Games in 2018.

  • Sindhu becomes the first Indian to win a World Tour title. In the last 12 encounters, both Okuhara and Sindhu have won six times each.

  • Other than Sindhu, Sameer Verma in the men’s singles was the only Indian contender for the title.

  • Sameer, who holds the 14th position in the BWF rankings, got through to the semi-final after a convincing 21 - 9,21 - 18 win over Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen. But his journey ended in the semi-final round when he conceded defeat to Wimbledon champion Shi Yuqi of China in a three-set match. After winning the first set, he lost the game 21 - 12,20 - 22,17 - 21.

  • The BWF World Tour Finals is an annual badminton competition that takes place at the end of every year.

  • The badminton players having most points from all the events of the BWF World Tour in that calendar year compete with each other in this tournament. It was held from 12th to 16th December 2018 in Tianhe, Guangzhou, China. The total prize of the tournament was $1,500,000.
