Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport sets record with 980 flights in 24 hours. On January 20, Mumbai airport created a new world record for single-runway operations by handling 980 arrivals and take-offs in 24 hours, or almost one flight every minute.

  • The Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport bettered its own feat of 974 flights in 24 hours, recorded on December 6, 2017.

  • Mumbai, battling a severe space crunch, is now headed to achieving the four digit mark in flight operations in a 24-hour window.

  • Sydney-based Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) in its 2017 annual report had said Mumbai airport, which has reached 94 % of its maximum passenger handling capacity, would reach saturation point in 2018.

  • Mumbai overtook Gatwick with 45.2 million people flying in and out in fiscal 2017 as against 44 million at Gatwick.

  • Mumbai handles an average of around 48 movements during peak hours.

  • Mumbai airport handles 837 arrivals or take-offs in a day — an average of 80 flights more than Gatwick, which handles 757 movements in a day
