NITI Aayog & Google signed Statement of Intent (SoI) to enhance growth in artificial intelligence (AI) & machine learning (ML) ecosystem in India. SoI was signed on 7th May, 2018. SoI was signed by Anna Roy, Advisor, NITI Aayog & Rajan Anandan, Vice President of Google India & South East Asia.

Highlights of SoI:

  • NITI Aayog will setup national programme to perform research & development in advanced technologies like AI.

  • NITI Aayog is developing India’s national strategy on AI w/National Data & Analytics Portal for wide deployment & use of AI.

  • Google will train & incubate Indian AI startups in accelerator program. Startups will be mentored & coached by Google & its affiliates so that AI can be utilized in better way in their respective business models.

  • As part of program, Indian researchers, scholars & university faculty will be funded for AI-based research.

  • Google will launch online training courses on AI for students, graduates & engineers.

New Intitiatives

Google & NITI Aayog will work on following initiatives:

  • Organise trainings for relevant government functionaries to introduce them to open source AI tools w/goal of enabling more effective governance.

  • Offering grants & scholarships to researchers, scholars & university faculty conducting cutting edge research in field of AI/ML in India.

  • Organising AI/ML study jams for students & developers based on Google’s Machine Learning Crash Course (MLCC) on fundamentals of machine learning

  • Incubating Indian AI/ML startups in program where they will be mentored by Google to better leverage AI in their respective business models.

  • Organise Hackathon focused on using AI/ML & open data sets to solve key challenges within agriculture, education, healthcare, etc. in India.

  • Hackathon might use Kaggle, global platform to engage international participation.

  • Google w/NITI Aayog will conduct hands-on training programs to familiarise policymakers & technical experts in governments on AI tools, & their usage in governance.
