Three Hydro-Electric Projects

This project will collectively play expand the Hydropower sector of Himachal Pradesh.

  • Koldam HEP: It is 800MW capacity project executed by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in Bilaspur district.
  • Parbati HEP: It is Stage-III project with a capacity of 540 MW of National Hydropower Corporation (NHPC) in Kullu district.
  • Rampur HEP: It is 412 MW capacity project of Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) Rampur project in Shimla district.

BHEL’s Contribution

  • Huge experience in hydroelectric projects (HEPs).
  • More than 500 hydro-generating sets have been contracted by BHEL with a cumulative capacity of more than 29,000 MW of different ratings in India and abroad.
  • Hydro installations are in operation in India and also in other countries like Bhutan, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Nepal, Tajikistan, Taiwan, Rwanda and Vietnam.

Importance of Hydro-Projects

  • Hydropower is generated by hydro-projects.
  • It is a renewable source of energy.
  • This project does not consume water for generation of electricity but only utilizes the potential energy of the water.
  • Hydro-projects not produce greenhouse gas emission achieving the low carbon path.
  • Hydropower potential of around 1, 45,000 MW is in India and it has 60% load factor.
  • Only around 26% of Hydropower capacity is currently exploited in India.
