Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated first International Agro biodiversity Congress in the national capital attended by 900 delegates from 60 countries brainstorming on conservation of genetic resources. The conference will be held from 6th to 9th November.

  • Organised by the Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources and Biodiversity International- CGIAR Research Centre headquartered in Rome, Italy.
  • Initiate and encourage research in agro-biodiversity essential to ensure global food, nutrition and environment security.
  • Prepare road map to improve food, nutrition, and health security by optimal utilisation of agro biodiversity though protecting agro-ecosystems.
  • Adopt Delhi Declaration on Agro biodiversity management and use.
  • India is recognized as a mega-diversity centre having unique crop and animal diversity lagging in preservation.
  • Develop a network of partnerships to support biodiversity management system at regional, national, and global levels.

About Agro- Biodiversity

  • Agro biodiversity includes all species that are closely woven in an agricultural ecosystem.
  • Includes variety and variability of animals, plant, and microorganism used directly or indirectly for food and agriculture.
  • India has unique crop and animal diversity.
  • India covers 2.4 percent of the world’s land area and yet accounts for 7 - 8 percent of all recorded species including above 91,000 species of animals and 45,000 species of plants.
