The National Banana Festival (NBF-2018) was held at Kalliyoor, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala from February 17 to 21. The festival was organised by Centre for Innovation in Science and Social action (CISSA) in partnership with Kalliyoor Grama Panchayat and a host of National and State organisations.

What Did the Banana Festival Have?

  • The exhibition showcased technologies and products made utilizing underutilized parts of banana such as peels, leaves, pseudo-stem, stalk and inflorescence in various food and non-food applications.

  • The products served as thickening agents, coloring and flavor, alternative source for macro and micronutrients, neutraceuticals, livestock feed, natural fibres, sources of natural bioactive compounds, bio-fertilizers and a source of biogas.

What is Banana?

  • The banana fruit is widely eaten raw, but many varieties are fried, roasted, juiced, dried or chipped to make healthy and affordable snacks.

  • There are a variety of value added food products from not only banana fruit but also from by-products like peels, stalk and inflorescence.

  • The fruit is variable in size, color, and firmness, but is usually elongated and curved, with soft flesh rich in starch covered with a rind, which may be green, yellow, red, purple, or brown when ripe.

  • The fruits grow in clusters hanging from the top of the plant.

What Are the Advantages of Banana?

  • It helps with weight loss, reducing obesity, curing intestinal disorders, relieving constipation, and curing conditions like dysentery, anemia, tuberculosis, arthritis, gout, kidney and urinary disorders.

  • It is good for reducing blood pressure protecting heart health, boosting metabolism and immunity, reducing the severity of ulcers, ensuring healthy eyes, building strong bones, and detoxifying the body.
