Indian President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to National Sports Ordinance, 2018 on 1stJune, 2018. Ordinance had earlier received approval from Union Cabinet on 23rd May, 2018. Proposal for approval of ordinance was put forward by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.

  • For establishment of University, Manipur govt. has made available around 325.90 acres of land in Koutruk, West Imphal dist. of Manipur.

Key Features of National Sports University Ordinance, 2018

  • National Sports University Ordinance, 2018 will be along lines of National Sports University Bill, 2017.

  • Approval of ordinance will pave way for set up of country’s 1st National Sports University w/headquarters at Manipur.

  • Specialised University, 1st of its kind, will aim to promote sports education in areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports management & sports coaching.

  • It will function as national training centre for select sports disciplines by adopting best international practices.

  • University would help provide boost to sports activities in country & improve country’s sports performance at national & international levels. It will lead to employment generation.

  • Proposal was formally announced in Budget speech of 2014 - 15 on 10th July 2014.

Objectives of National Sports University

  • Research, development & dissemination of knowledge in physical education & sports sciences.

  • Strengthening physical education & sports training programmes.

  • Generating knowledge capabilities, skills & competence at various levels.

  • Training talented athletes to help them to evolve into international level athletes.
