New Events for Tokyo Olympics Approved by IOC

A number of new events have been introduced by the International Olympic Committee for the 2020 Tokyo Games. Decision in this regarded was taken in the IOC՚s Executive Board meeting which was held at Lausanne, Switzerland.

  • Main reason to add these new events to shows IOC՚s focus on gender equality and appeal to young people.

Key facts:

  • Now Tokyo Olympics would have 321 events which were previously 306 events held at Rio 2016.
  • The new events include a mixed 4 × 400m with 14 other events such as 3-on-3 basketball, the mixed relay, mixed swimming, mixed team archery, BMX freestyle etc.
  • Other new events are mixed triathlon and a mixed team event for judo will also be included in the Tokyo games
  • Each team of judo have 3 men and 3 women and all represents different weight classes.
  • Still mixed-gender team have not been included in judo world championships.
  • But Mixed Doubles will be included for Table Tennis competition.
  • In Germany the mixed event was recently featured in the world championships.
  • 10 minute 3-on-3 basketball event will also played on a half-sized court.
  • International Basketball Federation have adopted this game was as an official discipline with common rules in 2007.
  • Now total 18 double events will take place in Tokyo Olympics which was 9 in Rio Olympics.
