North Eastern Cultural and Information Centre will be set up in Delhi soon in line with the priority of North East region. Centre to act as cultural and information hub of the North Eastern Region.

  • To be constructed at par with the international standards with library-cum-reading room

  • Will have material on North Eastern Region and an art gallery showcasing the North East

  • Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has allotted land to North Eastern Council (NEC) for this purpose with project expected to be completed within 1 - 2 years.

Other Initiatives for NE Region

  • Ministry of DoNER created “Venture Capital Fund” for the young start-ups and entrepreneurs initiating enterprises in NE region.

  • Construction of Barak hostel in JNU for accommodating NE students

  • Construction of a girl’s hostel in Bengaluru University for Northeast students.

  • Four permanent stalls in Dilli Haat to promote North East products

  • Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Center for Policy Research and Analysis formally launched at the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (RGIIM), Shillong to link the NEC with institutes of excellence for making it a state-of-art resource centre.

  • Steps are being taken to provide better connectivity to NE region via rail networks, roads, and waterways.

  • Tourism has gained momentum in the North East in the last few years giving boost to economy.

  • Setting up Brahmaputra Study Centre in the Guwahati University.

What is North Eastern Council (NEC)?

  • Nodal agency for the economic and social development of the North Eastern Region consisting of eight States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

  • Constituted in 1971 by an Act of Parliament.

Goals of the NEC

  • Preparation of integrated and holistic regional perspective plans to achieve specific short-term and long-term objectives to meet needs and aspirations of the region.

  • Identifying the strengths of the region to accelerate the pace of socio-economic development through participatory planning and implementation.

  • Synergizing the efforts of Central and state for balanced development

  • Promote coordinated approach for all agencies working for the development, public order, and security in the region.

  • Evolving innovative and appropriate policies and strategies for all-round rapid development.
