Law minister has declared that candidates will now have to declare their and their spouse’s income sources when they are applying for nominations to contest polls, these steps will get more transparency in the Election.

  • Currently poll contestants have to give details of assets and liabilities for self, spouse and three dependents in Form 26 while filing for nomination papers but don’t have to reveal their income source.

Salient Highlights

  • Law ministry has accepted suggestions of the Election Commission to include new column “source of income of self and spouse” in the affidavit.
  • The main reason of Election Commission, behind this modification is to get more transparency.
  • The Election Commission had submitted to Supreme Court that these decision to necessary include source of income will helps the voters make better decision whether the increase of the income of the candidate from the previous election is sensible or not.
  • As per the new rules poll contestants also have to necessary specify that they are Indian citizens or not because only Indian citizens can contest the elections.

Some other disclosers have to make by poll contests are:

  • Whether they hold an office of profit in a government office or not.
  • Details of earlier disqualification under the Representation of the People Act for distribution enmity or declared bankrupt.
