Opportunity Mars rover of NASA has found the edge of a crater on the red planet which could be lake of liquid water. It has founded rocks at the edge of Endeavour Crater which were either transported by a flood or by wind.

Key Facts:

  • The Opportunity rover has observed these features nearer to the crater rim’s crest above Perseverance Valley, which is located into the inner slope of the rim.
  • After completing a “walkabout” survey that area which is above it, researchers will drive Opportunity down Perseverance Valley.
  • Since 2011, the Opportunity mission is examining the sites on and near the western rim of Endeavour Crater.
  • The hole is about 22 kilometres.
  • Perseverance Valley is a big portion of the crest which is located at the top and only its west side is elongated patches of rocks line the sides of a slightly depressed, east-west swath of ground so it could be drainage channel many years ago.
  • But still the decision is not yet come that these are in-place rocks or transported rocks.
  • The site was the end of a catchment where a lake was located next to the crater rim.
  • It is also possible that a flood might have brought in the rocks, broken the rim and overflowed into the crater and carving the valley down the inner side of the rim.
  • The science team is considering all the possible explanations to conclude that how the slope might have changed.
  • As per one of conclusion is water rising from underground which have favoured the fractures as paths to the surface and contributed to weathering of the fracture-filling rocks.

About Opportunity Rover

  • Opportunity a robotic rover active was launched on 7th July 2003 and it is activated on Mars from 2004.
  • It is also known as MER-B (Mars Exploration Rover – B) or MER-1.
  • It was founded by NASA as part of Mars Exploration Rover program.
  • It was landed in Meridiani Planum on January 25, 2005 just after three weeks of landing of its twin Spirit (MER-A).
  • Spirit was stuck in 2009 and ceased communications in 2010, whereas Opportunity was activated till now (13 years, 60 days).
  • The rover had travelled 43.79 kilometres (27.21 miles) till 17th January 2017.
