Ovais Sarmad who is an Indian national has been appointed by the U. N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the post of Deputy Executive Secretary, which is a key post in the UNFCCC. U. N. Information Centre in Delhi, the appointment has been made after making wide consultations with the Conference of Parties.

About of UNFCCC:

  • Is an international environmental treaty negotiated at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
  • The UNFCCC objective is to “stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system”.
  • The framework set no binding limits on greenhouse gas emissions for individual countries and contains no enforcement mechanisms.
  • Initially an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee produced the text of the Framework Convention during its meeting in New York.
  • United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has 197 parties.

  • The UNFCCC was opened for signature at the 1992 UNCED in Rio de Janeiro.
