Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has restricted manufacture of Oxytocin formulations for domestic use to public sector only. It has banned import of Oxytocin & its formulations. Order comes into effect from 1st July.

Who Can Manufacture Oxytocin?

  • Only Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (KAPL), public sector company, will manufacture this drug for domestic use. It will supply drug to registered hospitals & clinics in public & private sector directly.

Reason for Ban on Oxytocin

  • Drug is misused in dairy industry where livestock is injected w/Oxytocin to make them release milk at time convenient to farmers.

  • Oxytocin is used to increase size of vegetables such as pumpkins, watermelons, eggplants, gourds, & cucumbers.


  • Oxytocin is dubbed hug hormone, cuddle chemical, moral molecule, & bliss hormone due to its effects on behaviour, including its role in love & in female reproductive biological functions in reproduction.

  • Oxytocin is hormone that is made in brain, in hypothalamus. It is transported to, & secreted by, pituitary gland, which is located at base of brain.

  • It acts both as hormone & as brain neurotransmitter.

  • Release of oxytocin by pituitary gland acts to regulate 2 female reproductive functions: Childbirth & Breast-feeding.

  • Carbetocin: World Health Organization (WHO) has come up w/safe & effective alternative to controversial drug oxytocin.

  • While Oxytocin, must be stored & transported at 2–8 degrees Celsius, & becomes less effective when exposed to heat, Carbetocin does not require refrigeration & retains its efficacy for at least 3 years even if it is stored at 30 degrees Celsius, & in 75 % relative humidity.
