Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lays the foundation stone in Guwahati to setup All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Changsari of Kamrup District, Assam under the ’Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana’.

  • The institute will be 26 km far from Guwahati and will be completed in four years at the cost of Rs. 1, 123 corers in 189 acres. Institute will also comprise 750 beds hospital along with 22 super speciality departments with 16 operation theatres.
  • Every year 100 student of MBBS and 60 student of nursing will get admission in this institute.

Background

  • The reason behind establishment of AIIMS is that Delhi AIIMS was facing overcrowding because all the patients from all over country were rushed there. So that the government has announced to setting up of AIIMS in different parts of the country to make healthcare available for the peoples nearer to them.
  • Currently seven AIIMS are functioning in Indies different parts and they are as follow:
  1. New Delhi
  2. Bhopal
  3. Bhubaneswar
  4. Jodhpur
  5. Patna
  6. Raipur
  7. Rishikesh
  • Currently establishment of AIIMS is also going on in Bhatinda, Punjab after getting approval from Union Cabinet in 2016 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
  • Along with this 3 other AIIMS were also approved 2015 and they are:
  1. Nagpur (Maharashtra)
  2. Mangalagiri in Guntur (Andhra Pradesh)
  3. Kalyani (West Bengal)

About Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY)

  • PMSSY was announced in August 2003 as a Central Sector Scheme with the objective to provide best healthcare option for all regional of India also aims to increase more options for quality medical education in under-served or backward States.
