Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group’s Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering Company (PDOC) signed an agreement with JSC Ship Repairing Centre Zvyozdochka, Russia, for Medium Refits and Life Certification of 877 EKM Submarines in India.
The Type 877EKM has six 533mm torpedo tubes and carries 18 heavyweight torpedoes (six in the tubes and 12 on the racks), with an automatic rapid loader. Two targets can be tied up simultaneously.
Because of this agreement, Reliance Group has become the first private sector Indian company to refit of submarines in India. Both entities will execute the programme under a joint venture (JV) company with a symbolic value of 11,000 crore rupees in which PDOE will have 51% holding.
In agreement, Zvyozdochka aims to provide complete technical support and assistance to the joint venture Company along with improvement of infrastructure at the PDOE facilities in Gujarat and training to engineers.
The JV Company will also accept similar work for large submarine services of related class organized by countries such as Vietnam, Algeria and Iran. Zvyozdochka is Russia’s premier ship repairing Centre and it has undertaken upgradation and renovation of more than 90 warships and 120 submarines.
